People use Skype, Facetime, and Whatsapp all the time. If these services were no longer available, life would become impossible for quite a few of us.
This is the exact situation that we have right now in Qatar – one of the richest countries in the world. There was an Eid weekend, perhaps the biggest religious celebration, and that’s when Qataris noticed that there was something wrong with all the Voice over Protocol services.
Why did Qatar block these services?
There hasn’t been any news why the Government decided to take this course of action. One of the biggest internet providers in the country – Ooredoo, had this to say: “Quite a few of our users had issues with Skype or Facetime. However, we are in no way responsible for any them. The root of the problem is somewhere else.”
Some people have guessed this to be an issue with the bandwidth, yet these speculations were later proved to be false. For one thing, a big number of VoIP providers try to make the network run as fast as possible. Not to mention the efforts to decrease usage of data. Judging by all of this, bandwidth is not the problem.
After a few days, Qatari state has released a statement, saying that: “the country does not prohibit any use of this or similar technology.” Meanwhile, the law tells a different story. According to it, you need to have a license from ictQATAR before you can offer such services to everybody. And it doesn’t even matter if they are for free.
The only two companies which can offer such services are Qatar Telecom as well as Vodafone
Qatar. Not a monopoly, but it says the whole story.
There have been rumors that suggest Qatar Telecom is responsible for the whole situation. They are looking to become the only company in the market. No proof for the theory exists, but if this is the truth, hardly anyone would be surprised.
If Qataris can’t use VoIP services, it means that the only way to speak with people overseas is international calls. Not everyone can afford that.
A solution to the problem is available. A virtual private network enables you to use Skype, Whatsapp, Facetime, and much, much more.
Put VPN to use and get rid of the problem once and for all
VPNs have a lot of advantages. You can surf the internet without anyone knowing your location or history. The internet provider cannot track you. Therefore they cannot block you.
If you don’t believe us, then take a look at what is happening in the country. There are plenty of reports from Qataris who say that using a VPN has helped them overcome the problem. Now they can access Skype or Whatsapp just like before.
What about legislation of using such services in Qatar?
If you are not breaking the law, then there won’t be any penalties for using virtual private networks. The people who live in the country should also be free to call inside the state and abroad using VoIP.
What we can learn from this
It would be impossible to imagine living in Qatar without being able to use internet the way it was intended. There are a lot of foreign workers who have to make calls to their family and friend back home. International calls are too expensive, unlike VPNs.
Planning a trip to Qatar in the future? Then go prepared. Quite a few VPNs are available, but not all will work in this country. That’s why you should use NovaVPN. The developers paid extra attention to the problem of Qatari because they understand how difficult it would be to live there without free internet.
